THE ORIGINS OF

FOR ALL THE ADVANCEMENTS BY WHICH AN UPRIGHT ANIMAL CALLED 'MAN'  WOULD COME TO MAKE ON THIS PLANET… FROM THE TIME HE'D EMERGE FROM A PRIMORDIAL OOZE THAT HE'D FOUND HIMSELF STUCK IN... TO CRAWLING-CREEPING AND OTHERWISE SLITHERING OUT OF THAT MESS (WHICH SOME MIGHT ARGUE WAS OF HIS OWN MAKING)…  TO EVENTUALLY BEING ABLE TO STAND ERECT AND EVEN (SUPPOSEDLY) UPRIGHT ON THIS EARTH AS THE 'DOMINANT ANIMAL' THAT HE'D EVENTUALLY BECOME...  AND FINDING THAT HE EVEN HAD OPPOSABLE THUMBS -  (and an opposable brain with left and right hemispheres) TO THERBY DISCOVER HE COULD ACTUALLY CREATE OR EVEN GRASP SIMPLE OBJECTS AND CONCEPTS THAT WERE PLACED BEFORE HIM ( at times),.. UNLIKE THOSE OTHER ANIMALS WHICH STILL WANDERED ABOUT THE EARTH UPON ALL FOURS,... AND FINDING HE COULD ACTUALLY EVEN REASON BY (again supposedly) USING (part of) HIS (still small-and-evolving) BRAIN!... WHICH WAS HELD WITHIN A STILL ALL-TOO-THICK-SKULL... AND ATTEMPTING TO USE THAT NEW FOUND 'REASONING' IN CREATING WHAT HE WOULD CALL (his) 'HU-MAN LOGIC',...  AND USE IT TO SOLVE THE MYSTERIES OF THE WORLD AROUND HIM... (WHICH INCLUDED TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE FEMALE OF HIS SPECIES WAS TRYING TO SAY TO HIM ABOUT HIS STILL SOMEWHAT NEANDERTHAL MINDED FRIENDS AND WAYS)...

 

SOME  OF THOSE (supposedly) NOW THINKING (AND SOMEWHAT REASONING) APE-MEN DEVELOPED EVEN FURTHER INTO A (again supposedly) HIGHER SPECIES - WHICH BECAME KNOWN AS SCIENTISTS,... DOCTORS,... LAWYERS,... AND ANOTHER 'UPSTANDING' ANIMAL CALLED 'POLITICIANS'... AS A NUMBER OF THOSE BRIGHTEST AND NOW DEVELOPED BI-PEDAL APES (except the aforementioned attorneys and political animlas) SOON DISCOVERED THAT WITHIN EVERY FEW STEPS THEY WOULD TAKE ON THE EVOLUTIONARY LADDER THAT THEY HAD ASCENDED FROM THEIR PRIMORIDAL MESS (which again others say they themselves had created - and for which we're all eventually headed back to anyway),.. THERE SEEMED TO BE SOME 'SLIPPAGE'...   SOME UNEXPLAINED GENERATIONAL BACK SLIDING EVERY FEW OF GENERATIONS IN THE SPAWN THAT CAME TO SUPPOSEDLY SUCCEED THEM ON THIS PLANET OF THE APES. 

 

AS THE NOW ASCENDENT ONES -  LOOKED ON IN HORROR AND IN DISGUST AT THIS NEW GENERATIONS BACKWARDS BEHAVIOR AND THE ONES THEY CAME TO CALL 'BEATNIKS'.... 'HIPPIES'...  'JUVINILE DELINQUENTS'...   'PUNKS'...  OR EVEN WORSE... THE ONES THEY WOULD COME TO CALL...

(SINCE YOU TOOK ALL THAT TIME TO READ THE FICTIONAL STUFF…

EXCEPT FOR THAT PART ABOUT THE ATTORNEYS AND POLITICIANS!)

 

IN THE LATE SUMMER/EARLY FALL OF 1969... FOUR (SUPPOSEDLY) BRIGHT YOUNG STUDENTS WERE BEING ENROLLED AT A HIGH SCHOOL IN SUBURBAN KENSINGTON, MARYLAND - JUST OUTSIDE OF WASHINGTON, D.C., WHICH WAS NAMED AFTER ONE OF THE GREATEST OF THOSE ASCENDENT APE GENIUSES CALLED ALBERT EINSTEIN.

 

AND IT WAS AT THAT SCHOOL IN THE HOPED FOR TEACHING OF THIS WORLDS 'FUTURE GENIUSES', THAT THESE FOUR RATHER 'DIFFERENT' YOUNGSTERS,... WHO SHARED A COMMON DISDAIN FOR SUCH SCHOOLING,... OR ANYONE ATTEMPTING TO TELL THEM WHAT TO DO... (MUCH LESS HOW TO DO IT - SUCH AS A TEACHER AND/OR PARENT), FOUND EACH OTHER IN PASSING AMONG THE HALLWAYS (AND EVEN SOMETIMES BARELY PASSING IN CLASSES AT THAT SCHOOL)... AND AT AN OUTSIDE AREA IN FRONT OF THAT PLACE OF HIGHER LEARNING THEY CALLED 'THE HILL' (WHICH ACTUALLY WASN'T EVEN THAT MUCH OF A 'HILL') - WHERE THEY FOUND OTHER 'HIPPIES' GATHERING ABOUT EACH DAY (EVEN WHEN SCHOOL WAS IN SESSION)... AND ALSO FOUND IN EACH OTHER A PASSION FOR PLAYING MUSIC ON SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS FROM EACH OTHER.  SO BEING THE 'GENIUSES' THEY WERE (SUPPOSED TO BE) IN ATTENDING THAT SCHOOL NAMED FOR AN ACTUAL (REAL) GENUIS - THEY QUICKLY FIGURED OUT THEY HAD ALL THAT WAS NEEDED TO PUT TOGETHER A GROUP THAT WOULD BECOME QUITE A 'BIT' DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER YOUNG GROUP AT THAT TIME - DUE TO THE 'DIFFERENT' INSTRUMENTS WHICH ONE OF THOSE (supposed students of EINSTEIN) WAS BECOMING QUITE PROFICIENT AT. AND THUS THEY GAVE BIRTH TO A BAND THAT WOULD SHOCK MANY IN THE AREA, AND EVEN THE SCHOOL IN WHICH THEY HAD ALL ATTENDED,... BUT NOT JUST FOR THE MUSIC THEY CHOSE TO PLAY, WHICH WAS TO BECOME KNOWN AS 'COUNTRY-ROCK' - BUT BY THEIR VERY INSISTENCE THEY WOULD ONLY PLAY AND WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS,... AND FOR THE VERY NAME OF THAT BAND ITSELF WHICH

DAVE VAN ALLEN - MARK MATARESE - C. B. HEINEMANN & DAVID ALAN GATES 

 WOULD COME TO CALL (ALONG WITH MANY OTHERS - WHO CAME TO KNOW THEM, AS...)

 

BUT FIRST - BEFORE SLEAZE ACTUALLY BEGAN - THERE WAS QUITE A 'BIT' OF DISCUSSION OVER THE NAME OF THE FUTURE 'SLEAZE!'... WHICH WOULD SHOCK THE STUDENTS,... THE SCHOOL,.. AND OTHERS (ESPECIALLY ADULTS) IN THE AREA OVER THE BANDS ORIGINAL MONIKER....

 

C.B. HEINEMANN - THE ORIGINAL SLEAZE!' DRUMMER.... HAD KNOWN DAVID SINCE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL WHEN DAVID WAS (JUST STARTING) PLAYING BASS FOR A LOCAL GUITAR LEGEND (AT LEAST IN THAT GUITAR PLAYERS' OWN MIND, AND AN IMPRESSIONABLE YOUNG DAVID) BY THE NAME OF 'JIMMY' (SOMEBODY) WHO COULD IMITATE EVERYTHING WHICH THE GUITAR PLAYERS IDOL - JIMI (HENDRIX), DID ON THE GUITAR. SO DAVID ASKED 'YOUNG C.B.' IF HE'D LIKE TO JOIN HIM AND JIMMY (SOMEBODY) IN A BAND. AS THE TRIO BECAME QUITE PROFICIENT ON THEIR RESPECTIVE INSTRUMENTS - THEY WERE ASKED TO BACKUP AN ACTUAL LEGENDARY ALL BLACK GROUP OF SINGERS CALLED "THE SUMMITS" OUT OF WASHINGTON, D.C. - WHO HAD A RECORD OUT ENTITLED "I JUST CAN'T GET OVER LOSING YOU" WHICH WAS TOPPING THE 'URBAN' (BLACK) CHARTS IN CHICAGO - PHILLY - BALTIMORE AND D.C..

 

SO THOSE "3 WHITE BOYS" PLAYED BEHIND "THE SUMMITS" FOR A NUMBER OF MAJOR SHOWS (see C.B.'s linked article entitled 'THREE WHITE BOYS') AND CLUBS (EVEN THOUGH C.B. & DAVID WERE MINORS AT THE TIME)… TILL YOUNG DAVID HAD A KNIFE PULLED ON HIM BY A 'BROTHER' OF COLOR IN A CLUB ON GEORGIA AVENUE CALLED 'THE PART III'  IN NW WASHINGTON, D.C. ONE NIGHT, WHO WASN'T TOO ACCEPTING OF ANY WHITE BOY BEING IN "HIS" CLUB,… UNTIL ONE OF THE SUMMITS CAME UP FROM BEHIND THAT 'BROTHER' - THREW THE IDIOT OUT THE FRONT DOOR OF THE CLUB,… TOLD THE BAND THAT WAS OPENING UP FOR THE SUMMITS TO "SHUT THE HELL UP",  AND INFORMED THAT CROWD AT THE CLUB THAT IF ANYONE BOTHERED HIS 'WHITE BOY BROTHERS' AGAIN, THEY'D HAVE TO ANSWER TO HIM AND THE REST OF THE SUMMITS. 

 

SO EVEN THOUGH DAVID,… C.B. AND THAT OTHER WHITE BOY WERE NOW ACCEPTED AS THE 'COOL BROTHERS' ON THE BLACK D.C. CLUB CIRCUIT - DAVID DECIDED HE'D LIKE TO LIVE TO SEE HIS 16th BIRTHDAY, AND QUIT THAT BAND WITH C.B. (along with the third white boy - as it also became increasingly difficult to explain to young David's parents that they were 'just practicing' late every night, instead of playing in some of the wilder clubs in downtown D.C. - as well as the increasing fear of possibly running into David's father who was a Deputy Fire Chief with the D.C. Fire Department, and responsible for sometimes checking those clubs they played at for fire safety and crowd control in the number of people permitted by law in those clubs.)

 

C.B. AND DAVID THEN BOTH SAFELY REACHED THEIR NEXT YEARS BIRTHDAYS AND EVEN THEIR NEXT GRADE LEVEL (TO THE SURPRISE OF THEIR TEACHERS) AND MOVED ON TO EINSTEIN HIGH SCHOOL THE NEXT YEAR - ALONG WITH A GUITAR PLAYING FRIEND OF C.B.'s NAMED MARK MATARESE, WHO HAD JUST TRANSFERRED OVER FROM HIS 'GOOD' (AND STRICT) CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN NEARBY WHEATON, MARYLAND (CALLED GOOD COUNSEL), WHERE YOUNG MARK'S PARENTS HAD SENT HIM TO (HOPEFULLY) 'EXORCISE' HIS LOVE OF THAT "DEVIL'S MUSIC"HE SEEMED TO BE DRAWN TO KNOWN AS ROCK N' ROLL… AND MARK KNEW ANOTHER YOUNG EINSTEIN STUDENT - DAVE VAN ALLEN, WHO PLAYED  A RARELY HEARD (ESPECIALLY IN ROCK N' ROLL) PEDAL STEEL GUITAR, WHICH DAVID (GATES)… THOUGHT WAS 'COOL'.  ESPECIALLY AFTER HEARING DAVE (VAN ALLEN) PLAYING HENDRIX LICKS ON THAT INSTRUMENT WHICH NORMALLY WAS HEARD 'JUST' DOING THAT MOURNFUL 'WHINEY COUNTRY STUFF'*.

 

(*young David (Gates) comments at that time - as no other Sleaze would even say 'cool' ... or make any disparaging remark about any country pickers playing, who's licks have always been ripped off by rockers anyway! [e.g. - Chuck Berry... Mark Knopfler]). 

 

SO,… DAVID (Gates) JOINED UP AGAIN WITH C.B. TO NOW PUT TOGETHER A COUNTRY ROCK GROUP… FOR WHICH HE SAID THEY NEEDED A NAME OTHER THAN THE ONE THAT C.B. - MARK AND DAVE (VAN ALLEN) HAD CHOSEN TO USE, WHICH WAS BASED ON THEIR RESPECTIVE FAMILIES HISTORICAL LINEAGE (along with some hispanic guitar player who was briefly with them). AFTER ONE RATHER IRATE VICE PRINCIPAL AT A NEIGHBORING HIGH SCHOOL (BLAIR HIGH IN SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND - which held a lot of teen dances) THREATENED PHYSICAL HARM TO DAVE VAN ALLEN AND DAVID ALAN GATES, WHO HAD GONE OVER TO THAT SCHOOL - AT THE REQUEST OF SOME STUDENTS AT BLAIR, TO SEE IF THEY COULD PLAY A TEEN CONCERT THERE.   BUT THE VICE PRINCIPAL IN HEARING THE NAME OF THEIR GROUP, THREATENED THAT IF HE EVER CAUGHT THEM USING THE NAME OF "MICS/SPICS/ AND WAPS" AT HIS SCHOOL, …  OR ANY SCHOOL,… ANYWHERE IN THE CITY,… THE COUNTY,… OR EVEN HIS "GOD BLESSED UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"  ... HE'D MAKE SURE "THEY'D BE DRIVEN OUT OF THE U.S. of HIS A.!"

 

SO AFTER SOME DISCUSSION - DEBATES - AND EVEN ACTUAL ARGUMENTS BACK AT A BAND REHEARSAL… SOMEONE (AND ACTUALLY NO ONE NOW QUITE REMEMBERS OR EVEN READILY ADMITS AS TO JUST WHO SUGGESTED IT

SINCE THEY'RE ALL 'OLD' NOW) DECIDED TO CALL THIS WHOLE MUSICAL MESS...

 

SLEAZE! 

 

BY 1974 - THE ORIGINAL SLEAZE! HAD DEVOLVED INTO JUST MARK AND DAVID (GATES)  - AS C.B HEINEMANN DECIDED HE WAS TIRED OF PLAYING DRUMS - SEEING AS HOW DAVID, DAVE AND MARK SEEMED TO GET THE ATTENTION OF ALL THE GIRLS IN THE AUDIENCE FIRST, SINCE THEY PLAYED THEIR GUITARS (PEDAL STEEL AND THE FOUR STIRNG ONE CALLED THE BASS) AT THE FRONT OF THE STAGE WHILE HE WAS "STUCK" IN THE BACK - BANGING AWAY ON THE DRUMS,... (AND DECIDING HE WANTED TO BE INVOLVED MORE WITH HIS IRISH ROOTS MUSIC) IN FORMING AN ALL ACOUSTIC CELTIC GROUP CALLED THE 'ANCIENT ORPHIC MYSTERY BAND"… AND DAVE VAN ALLEN DECIDED HE WANTED TO GET BACK TO THE ORIGINAL 'ROOTS' OF HIS INSTRUMENT AND PLAY 'HARD' COUNTRY. (*The "whiney" stuff that David (Gates) didn't really like)

 

SO DAVID (Gates) AND MARK - DESPITE HAVING MADE QUITE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES AND SLEAZE IN THE D.C. AREA  (AND EVEN AT THEIR OLD SCHOOL - WHEN THEY TOOK OVER ONE CLASSROOM AT EINSTEIN - AND TAKING (borrowing) THE STAGE BANDS PA EQUIPMENT TO DRAG IT UP THE STAIRS AND PERFORM DURING THE SCHOOLS 'FREE FORM EDUCATION WEEK'  DURING THOSE TURBULENT TIMES IN THE LATE 60's, WHEN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE KIDS WERE TAKING OVER SCHOOLS ANYWAY - TO PROTEST THE VIETNAM WAR AND THE DRAFT). AS THE 'BRILLIANT' EDUCATORS AT EINSTEIN DECIDED TO ACTUALLY ALLOW THESE SLEAZE! TO RUN CLASSES IN (their) 'MUSIC APPRECIATION CLASS", AND DECIDE THEIR COURSE OF STUDIES FOR A WEEK TO SEE IF THOSE SLEAZE! COULD DO ANY BETTER IN LEADING THE SCHOOL (WHICH THEY DIDN'T... BUT HAD FUN TRYING TO)... OPENING UP THEIR FELLOW STUDENTS AND EVEN THE TEACHERS TO A 'SONG APPRECIATION STUDY HALL' WITH THEIR ORIGINAL MUSIC,... AND EVEN OPENING UP ANOTHER NEARBY HIGH SCHOOLS BRAND NEW AUDITORIUM - IN A ROCK CONCERT WITH ANOTHER LOCAL BAND CALLED SAGEWORTH AND DRUMS - WITH THE FIRST AND (FOR AWHILE) LAST ROCK CONCERT EVER HELD AT THAT SCHOOL, (AS SLEAZE! FANS FROM ALL OVER THE AREA FILLED THAT NEW HALL AND THE SCHOOLS PARKING LOTS WITH A LOT OF DISCARDED BEER CANS AND TRASH),...   - AND OTHER SCHOOLS... CLUBS,… AND CONCERT HALLS BEGAN TO TAKE NOTICE OF THAT GROUP AND THEIR GROWING FAN BASE - IN BOOKING THE GROUP, BUT REFUSING TO PROMOTE AND ADVERTISE THAT ANY "SLEAZE!" WERE PLAYING IN THEIR "FINE" ESTABLISHMENTS,… EVEN AT A NOTORIOUS BIKER BAR NEAR THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND CALLED MR. HENRY'S… WHERE SLEAZE! HAD PLAYED EVERY MONDAY NIGHT, WHO BOOKED THEM FOR AN EXTENDED STAY…BUT STILL REFUSED TO PUT THE BANDS NAME UP ON THE MARQUEE ALONG ROUTE 1 IN FEAR OF ATTRACTING ANY MORE 'SLEAZE!' FANS INTO THE AREA AND BAR... WHICH DAVID (GATES) SOLVED WITH A BIT OF INGENUITY,… (AND SOME SUPER GLUE AND RATHER LARGE VINYL LETTERING ON THEIR LARGE NEON SIGN),... WHICH STAYED THERE FOR QUITE SOME TIME - AND DURING THE TIME TIME WHEN MUSICIANS DAVE JOHNSON (PIANO)… STEVE ALDE (GUITAR)... AND GREG HARMON (DRUMS) WOULD JOIN MARK MATARESE AND DAVID ALAN GATES IN  SLEAZE! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

IN MID NOVEMBER OF 1977 - DAVID AND MARK WENT INTO BIAS RECORDING STUDIOS IN FALLS CHURCH, VIRGINIA - TO FINALLY RECORD AND RELEASE AN ACTUAL RECORD (ORIGINAL - ACTUAL VINYL) OF SOME SLEAZE! RECORDINGS,

 

A PRODUCER FROM AUSTRALIA WITH HARVEST RECORDS WAS WORKING IN THE STUDIO NEXT TO THEM - HEARD THEIR MUSIC OUT IN THE HALLWAYS, AND OFFERED TO PURCHASE THE MASTERS AND PAY FOR THE SESSIONS - WHICH DAVID REFUSED TO GO ALONG WITH, HAVING LEARNED EARLY ON NOT TO GIVE UP CONTROL OF THEIR MUSIC OR RECORDINGS WHEN OTHER PEOPLE WANTED TO (MIS)MANAGE THE GROUP AND THEIR MUSIC,

INCLUDING ONE COMPANY THAT SPECIFICALLY BOUGHT AND BUILT A STUDIO IN SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND TO MANAGE & RECORD SLEAZE!  BUT THE BAND ALWAYS (STUBBORNLY AND MAYBE EVEN STUPIDLY) REFUSED TO GIVE UP CONTROL OVER THEIR MUSIC, IMAGE AND "GOOD" NAME... ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT COMPANY TRIED TO GET THEM TO RECORD ANOTHER ARTISTS "BUBBLE GUM" SONG NAMED 'SALLY JEAN' AND A STRIP CLUB OWNER IN BELTSVILLE, MARYLAND... WHO'D HEARD ABOUT THE GOUP FROM ONE OF HIS DANCERS - OFFERED THE BAND A RECORDING DEAL WITH HIS OWN SMALL LABEL HE CALLED C.S.A. - "COUNTRY SHOWCASE AMERICA"... AND THEIR CHOICE OF ANY NUMBER OF WOMEN WHO WORKED FOR HIM AT HIS CLUB,...ALONG WITH MAJOR PROMOTIONS ON HIS NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO SHOW (AGAIN CALLED "COUNTRY SHOWCASE AMERICA") WHICH FEATURED MAJOR COUNTRY ARTISTS THAT CAME TO D.C. FOR CONCERTS, AND TAPE LIVE SHOWS AT HIS CLUB,... BUT AGAIN SLEAZE! SAID 'NO' - BECAUSE 'MISTER COUNTRY MUSIC SHOWCASE' - LIKE MANY OTHERS BEFORE HIM,... WANTED TO CONTROL THEIR MUSIC, AND EVEN CHANGE THEIR IMAGE AND NAME INTO 'SOMETHING LESS OFFENSIVE' THEN 'SLEAZE!'.

 

SO DAVID AND MARK FINALLY WENT IN TO THE STUDIO IN THE EARLY WINTER OF 1977 -  TO START WORK ON A SLEAZE! ALBUM THAT WOULD TOTALLY CONFUSE EVERYONE FROM THE MUSIC THEY'D MADE BEFORE, and having gotten tired of explaining during the beginning of the 'punk' era to anyone not familiar with the "old" Sleaze! - that they didn't wear nose rings, have metal piercings in other parts of their body - or were heavily made over in body art and tattoos) AS THEY WENT INTO REHEARSALS AT NILS LOFGREN's POTOMAC, MARYLAND PRACTICE PLACE (and almost ruining his trampoline) - ALONG WITH SOME SPECIAL FRIENDS AND GUEST ARTISTS WHO SHOWED UP AT THE STUDIO, [SUCH AS A 'SWEET' SINGER NAMED "JAMES" WHO SANG LEAD ON DAVID'S 'DREAM AWAY' & 'THINK OF ME']….BUT THAT ENTIRE ALBUM PROJECT OF SLEAZE!  THAT DAVID WAS PRODUCING, CAME TO A SUDDEN AND TRAGIC HALT WHEN DAVID GOT THE NEWS THAT HIS YOUNGER BROTHER HAD BEEN KILLED.

 

SO MARK AND A DEVASTATED DAVID PUT THE ENTIRE PROJECT ON HOLD AFTER COMPLETING ONLY A FEW TRACKS FOR THE PLANNED ALBUMS RELEASE.  

 

THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD COME OUT OF THAT SESSION WAS A SPECIAL SONG ENTITLED 'MOMENTS' WHICH DAVID WROTE THE NEXT DAY AFTER HIS BROTHER HAD DIED,... ABOUT ALL THE THINGS DAVID HAD NEVER SAID TO HIS BROTHER WHILE HE WAS STILL ALIVE,... AND THAT RECORDING WAS BURIED WITH HIS BROTHER AT HIS GRAVESITE - AFTER THE CHURCH PASTOR ASKED EACH FAMILY MEMBER, IF THEY'D WISHED, TO PLACE SOMETHING PERSONAL IN WITH HIS BROTHER AT THE GRAVESITE. AND THE MOST PERSONAL THING DAVID COULD EVER DO WAS WITH HIS MUSIC - AND IN A SONG THAT WAS RECORDED WITH A CLOSE HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND OF HIS YOUNGER BROTHER SINGING THE MELODY AND WORDS THAT DAVID COULDN'T BRING HIMSELF TO SAY OR SING.

 

SIX MONTHS AFTER HIS BROTHERS DEATH - IN 1978,... WORD HAD GOTTEN OUT THAT AN ACTUAL 'SLEAZE!' STUDIO RECORDING HAD BEEN MADE AT BIAS STUDIOS,.. AND DAVID DECIDED TO RELEASE IT JUST LOCALLY IN THE D.C. AREA FOR ALL THE 'OLD' FANS OF THAT GROUP... FEATURING JAMES ON VOCALS…. AND 'DREAM AWAY' BECAME ONE OF THE MOST REQUESTED, AND MOST AIRED SONGS AT THAT TIME FOR ANY LOCAL GROUP, AND GETTING INTO REGULAR ROTATION ON REGIONAL STATIONS. AND EVEN ATTRACTING THE ATTENTION OF A DIVISION OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, WHO WANTED TO SEND THIS "SLEAZE!" OUT OF THE COUNTRY!!!!

 

 

A DIVISION HEAD OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION AGENCY - "THE VOICE OF AMERICA", WHICH WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR SENDING ARTISTS OUT OF THE COUNTRY FOR TOURS, WHO WAS A FAN OF SLEAZE! AFTER THEIR RECORDING ATTRACTED HIS ATTENTION,... WAS DISCUSSING WITH DAVID THE POSSIBILITY OF THE GROUP TOURING OVERSEAS OVERSEAS FOR A STATE SPONSORED SERIES OF CONCERTS (which originally David thought was an attempt by that former Vice Principal at Blair High School when SLEAZE was first known as 'MICS, SPICS & WAPS' to carry out his threat of getting such SLEAZE out of  "his God Blessed America for good....") BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY JUST TO DO A TOUR OF VOICE OF V.O.A. RADIO STATIONS, AND CONCERTS FOR THE STATE DEPARTMENT - BUT IT WAS SADLY THE THE LAST TIME THAT THE TWO REMAINING ORIGINAL SLEAZE MEMBERS EVER WORKED TOGETHER ON THOSE STUDIO SESSION FOR THAT SINGLE.  AS DAVID BECAME INVOLVED WITH HELPING TRY TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE DEADLY CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG ABUSE , WHICH COST HIS YOUNGER BROTHER HIS LIFE - AND MARK EVENTUALLY DECIDED TO PUT TOGETHER A HARD ROCK VERSION OF SLEAZE! (the 4th) SINCE DAVID DECIDED TO MOVE OUT TO THE ("left" coast of) CALIFORNIA - (Los(t) Angeles), TO DO SOLO PROJECTS AS A WRITER AND PRODUCER. AND LATER GOT INVOLVED IN FILM PRODUCTION AND SCORING.

 

 

BUT BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE 'LEFT COAST', DAVID GAVE ONE LAST LOCAL CONCERT IN THE EARLY 80's IN D.C. TO HELP WITH A LOCAL TEEN DRUG AWARENESS CAMPAIGN DURING THE EARLY DAYS OF MTV WITH  A SPECIAL MUSIC VIDEO PRODUCTION CALLED 'TURN AWAY COCAINE'  THAT WAS DONE LOCALLY IN COOPERATION WITH DC101 FM RADIOWMAL-AM RADIO… (WHEN IT WAS STILL A MUSIC AND TALK RADIO STATION INSTEAD OF THE FAR RIGHT WING IDIOCY IT IS TODAY)…METROMEDIA 5 TV (NOW FOX TELEVISION 5 IN WASHINGTON, D.C),… CBS TV 9AND MEMBERS  OF THE (THEN) SUPERBOWL CHAMPION WASHINGTON REDSKINS


 

 

SO THE SINGLE 'DREAM AWAY' WAS TO BE THE ONLY SLEAZE RELEASE WITH ANY OF THE ORIGINAL SLEAZE! PLAYING TOGETHER ON RECORD, DESPITE THE FACT THAT (SOMEWHERE) THERE ARE MANY TAPES AND EVEN BOOTLEG COPIES FROM MANY SESSIONS AND CONCERTS THEY'D DONE OVER THE YEARS… GOING BACK TO THE TIMES WHEN THEY FIRST PLAYED TOGETHER AS STUDENTS AT A HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM BACK IN 1969… AND RAISING THE IRE AND EARS OF A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH THEIR NAME AND MUSIC DURING THAT TIME... UNTIL NOW.
